How To : Make Your Own Wikipedia eBook On Specific Topic
0Imagine that we’re going to list out the Internet based words and Services in the basis of Alphabetical order as A for Apple, B for Ball. Could you guess what will be the corresponding word for ‘W’? Obviously, you don’t want to think more because the Wikipedia, dubbed as the Free Encyclopedia is there to fill the place for and the awesome service will be still there even after years. Nowadays we’re hearing lot about the cyber crimes, scams, scandals and many more regarding the Web and it’s services including our favorites like Facebook (Hope you’d read about the incident made by making a public Facebook Event). One of the reasons for majority of people (especially parents & Teachers) is the mentioned Online Encyclopedia through which we could gather reliable, secure and updated content on any topic (As my experience). So it’s will be weird and hard to think about an Internet world which lacks the services and applications of Wikipedia, which still exists as a complete open source one and the very same one which replies to the useless and ridiculous Rules against Internet.
Therefore, for most of us Wikipedia will be our primary source of any content as the Google Searches show (For science, arts, sports and anything on world including Famous People). Especially if you’re a Knowledge Hungry Geek, you’ll be also a keen reader who couldn’t also stop reading Wikipedia since it’s interlinked in high intensity. If you’re start reading about ‘Blogging’, you’ll be moved to WordPress, Blogger and any article related to the activity. And all these information is under a single click so you won’t be able to stop reading Wikipedia much easily. But what you’ll do if you have enough free time to read but no Internet Connection or if you’ve to carry some Reliable Articles about one topic (say Open Source) to a place where you won’t be getting an Internet Connection and hence not the Online Encyclopedia as well. For most of you, downloading the web page and carrying it won’t be an easy task. So what about making a Wikipedia sourced eBook containing information about your desired topic or a section as well? So we’ll show you today how to make such an awesome and useful eBook.
Actually, this is not a new feature as it was available from 2009 itself but they were asking your Wikipedia account credentials for enabling this feature which means you need a Wikipedia account for Save Wikipedia articles in the form of an eBook. And two formats, PDF and ODT were only available at that moment so we’ve to say it’s a little tedious task. But now, Wikipedia has made changes in that sections too so that you could download Wikipedia articles in the formats PDF, ODT, EPUB, or a Kiwix file which means the content is instantly portable (Saying about EPUB ; You can save these articles as EPUB and read them using eBook readers for Smartphones and Tablets). And for doing all these things, you don’t need any account except some time. So just take the following simple steps to try this feature out.
Enabling the Feature
Point your Web Browser to Wikipedia Book Creator Page where you can see two simple buttons as shown in the image.
Put a click on the green colored Button to start making eBooks or Printed Books (as they’ve said) using Wikipedia. You’ll see nothing related to the Green button except redirecting to the Main Page of the great Online Source.
Collecting Desired Articles
Next step is of collecting your favorite articles in the same way you used to browser Wiki before. But you’ll be seeing a block at the top of the page as shown in the following image where you can add the specific page to your book.
If you’ve already added some pages to your book, there is an option named ‘Show Book’ which shows the number of pages in your book currently as well as leading you to the page where you can arrange and download your eBook or order a Printed booklet. So adding articles is as much easier. Isn’t it? So let’s jump to the next step.
Arranging Your Book and Downloading
After collecting all the pages to include in the book, next step is of arranging those pages in your desired order and proceeding to the downloading section. And Wikipedia has also set it good because you can head to the link ‘Show Book’ to arrange your book’s pages and download it. You can give the book a Title and subtitle as well as arranging the pages using a Drag & Drop feature.
So, after arranging all these things, you could simply download your Wikipedia eBook from the right section of the page. As you can see in the image, you’re provided with various Document formats like PDF, Open Document, Kiwix and EPUB. Select the appropriate format and hit the Download Button.
While all those works mentioned above were easier ones, the next one consists of a little bit time delay. Wiki will take a little time to layout your eBook, and generating the file in preferred format. So wait a few seconds (it’ll change according to the amount of pages) and Download your Wikipedia eBook and use it with portability.
And one thing, if you’ve made and downloaded one eBook from Wikipedia once, the site will prompt a window to know whether you want to add new pages to current pages to the same book or making a new eBook itself.
