To confirm you may go to Settings->About Phone.

Pre-Requistes:
1.Make sure that the phone is atleast 60% charged.
2. Back up all the phone data(contacts,messages,APN settings)
3.Sync all your contacts with your Gmail account
4. Now, enable USB Debugging Mode by going to Settings -> Applications ->Development -> USB Debugging
5.Make sure Samsung drivers are installed.

Procedure:
Step 1:

To begin with first download Odin .Here is the Odin to Root AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717 

Step 2:

Now download this file to Root AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717 from here .File to Root AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717

Step 3:

Now after downloading you will see a .tar file(pda.tar)Keep that file as it is.
Don’t extract it any further

Step4:

Now switch off your phone.Now  you need to put your phone in “Download Mode”. For that Press and hold “Volume Down + Power/Lock” buttons simultaneously until you see a screen that asks you to press “Volume Up” and after doing this you will see a screen wherein there will be an “android picture with Downloading written below”. Refer the pic below:-

Step 5:

Now connect your phone into PC and open the Odin package that you had downloaded.
You will see ID:COM section in the upper left corner turn yellow indicating that the device has been successfully connected.

Step 6:

Check the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes.

Step 7:

Now in the Odin, in the PDA section,click on the PDA tab and select the .tar filed you extracted.

Step8:

Now you have set up everything what was required . Verify from the image below if you have done everything right.

Step 9:

Now click on start and Rooting process will commence.

Step 10:

After the rooting is done, you will get a pass message on the Odin Screen and your phone will automatically restart and then can disconnect your phone from the PC.

Step 11:

Now after this,Go to Android Market, download “Superuser” app and install it.Thats it.
